LO1 Task 1: KTA 2: Key words


Key word definitions:
Denotation: The literal meaning of an image or graphic.
Connotation: Suggested and possible meanings
Preferred meaning: The carefully constructed meaning the media position us to accept
Mise-En-Scene: What is in the frame
Drop Capitals: Really big letter, which start off an article
Serif font: Fonts which have little bars on the end of the letters
Leading: The space between lines of text
Kerning: The space between letters
Strap lines: A smaller headline, printed above the main headline
Cross head: Small sub-heading used to split up a large block of text

Non-Statuory= Not for profit, unable to prosecute
ASA covers broadcast media (TV, web, radio, Film trailers) and print media (magazines, newspapers)

  • Adverts should not cause offence
  • Adverts should not glorify alcohol, sexual activity, drug taking
  • Adverts should not cause harm to children
  • Adverts should not be misleading
  • Adverts should not give false information about what they are selling, promoting or exaggerate claims made.
